Things I expect out of life
There's that list of things that we all know is the stuff that we all will never feel quite right about the world until our expectations are met. Today, I was talking about some of those expectations with friends, and I thought I should share them.
1) I expect a world where people get treated and rewarded decently, fairly, humanely and where everyone's most basic, urgent, and deepest needs are met, getting met, or help is on the way.
I know this doesn't happen today. I know every excuse that cynics have for why it can't happen. I don't give a shit. I expect this kind of world, and until I see it and until the world sees it, we're always going to know that the world is raw deal. And the more it's a raw deal, the more that cynicism and all the worst as well as all the more innocuous consequences that result from that cynicism become reality and often get worse before they get better.
2) I expect an apology (and some sense of their remorse, at least) from people who have sold me out, wronged me, or otherwise hurt me in some significant way that has seriously interrupted our relationship, as much as possible. I expect me to give apologies when they are due, as much as possible. And I expect that everyone who owes apologies to offer them to those they are due to.
Brandi and her abandonment of my closest friendship comes to mind immediately, here. My mom didn't live in the same town with me and had little contact with me after I was 12, and has kind of been a vindictive bitch, at times, much of my life. I have some grad school profs and an advisor who really let me down for reasons that I understand but which still has created significant distance in our relationships. I have two bosses who fired me arbitrarily that I'll probably never seen again (one has already apologized). I have two youngest siblings, a brother and a sister, who come to mind (unless they have a good reason to cut off communication that I don't know about and/or can't think of, can come up with a great excuse for cutting off communication or they can grow up -- they're both pretty young -- whichever comes first). And I am tired of the million compromises I have to make with people who can't learn to grow up and be decent and responsible because its the right thing to do.
3) I expect people to be responsible for their bullshit.
Bitterness, hate, repressed anger, control issues, pettiness, etc. I expect people to let that shit go. And when they can't, to expect to be ignored until they do. I expect people to forgive. And when they won't, I expect them to be loved and accepted for their weakness and fragility, but not to have their weakness and fragility to be confused with real strength. I expect people to have priorities based on what really matters in life and not just based on what really matters in their own personal lives. I expect people to pitch in and help out with important matters of life. I expect people to pitch in and help out with all the thinking and brainstorming and other hard work that comes with solving most of life's most serious problems. I expect people to be more honest, more open, and more real. And I expect that when they are not more honest, open, and real, that life will be just as much of a fucked up mess as it often is today.
4) I expect that people will at least see through other peoples' bullshit and lying to themselves and others, even if they have a hard time seeing through their own.
Much of how fucked up our perception and understanding of social reality is is based on how much we lie and hide what we're really thinking. To ourselves. To one another. And the ways that these lies overlap and fuck up our ability to get more honest with one another about life so that we all have a more accurate picture of what that life looks like. All the ways we hurt one another fuck up our honest expression and honest communication, which is the big reason why we should stop fucking hurting one another all the fuckin' time since this is what kills the mutual engagement that is so central to a more honest and decent life.
And at the very least, if President Bush is not going to get more honest about how much his international policy is fucking shit up and making many, many things in the world worse, at the very least, the rest of us should be able to look at his fuck-ups (most of which too many of us have cheerleaded with far too much enthusiasm) and say, "Hey, you're fucking shit up." I was in a similar situation, recently, when the classes I teach were having problems and we needed some changes in course. People didn't know quite what to say to me to get things moving in a better direction. But they did know to tell me that shit was not looking good. And that's a good instinct, even when it is less than ideal in its expression.
We lie to ourselves and one another all the fuckin' time. It is the persisent fuck-up of humanity that has fueled and maintained so much of our own destructiveness towards one another and toward ourselves. And if that cycle is to end, we are going to have to get more honest.
I very much understand that that is easier said than done. I, for one, have many things to come cleaner on in my life which I have tried to be as honest as I felt safe to be honest about in my life. And I want, personally, and for us, as humanity, to get more honest with ourselves and with others about life. But it will take less aggression, less hurtfulness, less punishment, less destructiveness and less self-destructiveness to get us there, as well as some courage. I've shown a lot of courage, I think, but I'm not a fool. And we are going to need a lot more courage and to create a lot less fear so that we don't all have to be Jesus Christ or Martin Luther King or Ghandi and give our lives or sacrafice ourselves to move humanity forward when it's in the kind of rut that it's in today (and always has been, really, but with more opportunity to correct our course).
5) I expect that a world where I can trust people more and where I'm not always looking over my shoulder wondering who I have to fear today. I expect people to know the difference between a better world in that direction and a worse world in the direction of more fear, control, punishment, and force and to help turn us all in the better direction. Fear, control, punishment, and force will not move us in a direction of less fear and more trust. Clearly the contrary is true, to anyone not lost in their bullshit on this one.
We undermine the social fabric the more we turn ourselves against one another. We undermine our sense of trust and community the more we try to scare people into submission rather than appealing to their consciences. Every law that gets passed that assumes bad faith on my part, every arbitrary imposition that assumes that I don't care, every effort to clamp down on my freedoms on the arrogant notion that someone knows better than I do is a tear in that social fabric and in a more authentic sense of trust and community. Every time anyone proposes to force me to do a goddamn thing other than, in the moment, to not be physically destructive towards others they undermine the kind of more authentic trust that is the only path forward for humanity.
Every time we work more out of fear than out of hope, we tear at that social fabric. And right now, it's in tatters. Because we've all taken it so much for granted.
And if we want that to change, we have to change course in a direction that takes seriously our responsibility to strengthen and more genuinely secure that social fabric. Guns and weapons and armies and police are all important for securing our basic safety needs. But they cannot substitute for the strong relationships and love and self-actualization that is needed to more authentically strengthen and secure our lives and our futures.
Every time we lie to ourselves and to one another about our need to love one another and be more honest with one another and be more decent with one another and be more equitable with one another and respect each others' freedom and choices and to just be better with one another...
Every time we do that, we make our lives and our neighbors' lives shitier.
And we need to cut that shit out if we want the world to get better.
And we need to start being the people that we know we want to be and can be, if we give our hearts and minds to that cause.
Those are 5 expectations I have for life. I just want to put
them out there. If people don't live up, then so be it. But that's my expectation, whether people (myself included) choose to live up to that expectation or not. But they are expectations that would significantly improve our lives and our futures, whether we choose to think about that and face up to that fact of life or not.
I am tired of all of the fear and the pain in my life and in all of our lives. I am tired of acting like it is better than it really is or that it is less scary and painful than it really is. I am tired of the stress and exhaustion that come with threats and pressure as the means of compelling action and all of the ways that this has significantly undermined the progress of America and humanity, just as it did/has in the Soviet Union, Iraq, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Syria, and every other force-driven regime in the world and throughout world history.
It is no mistake that the onset of humanity's most remarkable achievements occurred with the promise and fruits of liberal democratic, freer, more open and more equitable societies. Freedom and openness and equity create the space for us to do great things. So it is no mistake that our greatest leaders, thinkers, and citizens have been its strongest advocates.
If we are going to be great and to do great things, we need the freedom to fuck shit up and to make shit better. Without that freedom, we cannot be great. We will always be a petty, small species of intelligent primates too clever by half and not nearly intelligent enough to be honest with themselves or one another about their deepest needs and interests and to solve their mutual problems in light of that understanding.
What I need right now is sleep. So I'm going to go home and get some. I have grading due by Friday. But I need some sleep at this moment.
Have a great week, everyone:).
Love,
Ben

Yoo've channeled so much of your energy into your intellect - what about your spirit - and your sex life? You seem out-of-balance. I think you need to get over "Brandi" and turn off your analytical brain and get a blowjob!
Yeah, anonymous, it's amazing how you can grow all of those at once when you put your mind to it:).
Dating Brandi is just not of any interest to me, right now, particularly though not exclusively given that she's married. She's also been a pretty lousy friend, lately, so I don't know why she would be someone I would want to date. Brandi took what turns out what a pretty rare and special thing for a friendship and a relationship between a guy and a girl and has both completely taken it for granted and really kind of treated me like shit because I cared about it so much. So why I would want to even be friends with someone like that is beyond me, much of the time, except that she was my closest friend, at one point in my life.
I think you misread. I'm angry at Brandi because she cut off our friendship. It isn't a priority for her. It was the closest friendship I had ever had, so it's fairly painful, as you can imagine. I'm angry with her. I'll get over it. And she owes me an apology if I see her again.
And I'm not looking for either a repeat of my relationship with Brandi or a blowjob. Blowjobs, if you haven't noticed, are pretty easy to come by these days. Blowjob and offers to get laid are definitely not something I'm in short supply of these days.
I just expect more out of life and a girl and a relationship than that. And I'm holding out for love. It's quaint and old-fashioned, I know. But blowjobs just aren't really all that exciting by comparison, really.
I regret that Brandi didn't take that seriously when we were together. But that just means I expect better this time around.
The girl I marry will be my best friend. And sex will be a part of a fuller relationship, not the basis for escaping. And if she can't handle that, then she can find someone else. There is a pretty substantial oversupply of takers, right now, so I'm not worried that some girl will not step up to the plate. I'm just waiting for the right girl to come along who does want that kind of intimacy and friendship and love and has the personal qualities, the intelligence, and the heart to commit to that.
Brandi clearly did not. I don't want to date her or anything else.
I'm just disappointed with how poorly she's handled what to me was the closest friendship I had ever had, which I, apparently, was wrong to invest so much trust into. That's why I'm angry with her. Because I implicitly trusted that she was my best friend so she would show a similar sensitivity. I was wrong. Brandi did not care about that friendship the way I did, which is the most important part of my recognition for why I need to hold out for better.
The girl I'm looking for doesn't hold my thinking against me. She rightly recognizes it as an important strength, for me and to me, not some kind of threat to her ego. She appreciates the challenge and takes it up. She doesn't lamely look for a million excuses for why it's alright to treat me like shit so she can avoid all of that. All reasons that I hope make clear make Brandi a lesser choice as a girlfriend. I'm not interested in Brandi as a girlfriend (as I have made plentifully clear here and to Brandi; she just has a nasty habit of not hearing what she doesn't want to hear).
I am, on the other hand, interested in some kind of peace in my own heart, at least, and peace with Brandi, hopefully, around a friendship that I cared about, at one time, more than any friendship or relationship I had in my life and which I have no access at all to, today. I don't know how her family is doing. When she has kids, I can't meet them or keep up on how they're doing. When important things happen in her life or when she's exploring different career options or maybe even wildly considering more idealistic endeavors that, from our conversations, she seems to have foolishly left behind in her youth, I don't get to hear about any of those things. Or see how she's doing and know she's ok.
Making what turns out to be such a foolish investment in a friendship and then a relationship with Brandi has definitely taught me that in the big picture, what I want is someone more like me. Someone who takes love seriously. Someone who takes issues of priority in the world seriously. Someone who cares about the world as much as she cares about herself. Someone who is working actively and with passion to make the world a better place. And someone who can bring that kind of passion to a relationship so that I have someone who is as committed to me and my dreams as I am committed to her and her dreams. And I'm pretty clear that a good or great sex life is drawn out of that mutual commitment, not before it.
Brandi used to be that person, I thought. She is not now. She is not the committed girl that I knew when we went to school together and dated years ago, from every correspondence I have had with her in the last 5 years. That is sad to me. But it is a reality I have made peace with until Brandi chooses differently.
In the meantime, I am angry with her for abandoning a friendship that meant an awful lot to me, that was my closest long before I even thought about dating her or fucking her, and which she promised that she would not abandon when we broke up. Brandi breaks a lot of promises, so I'm learning not to count on them. It doesn't make it any less disappointing.
I will get over the pain of all of that, soon enough. I don't need anyone ooching me along because they, frankly, just don't seem to really give much of a shit about what I'm feeling.
In the meantime, I'll get as smart and take love as seriously and do whatever the fuck I want to do sexually and otherwise that I damn well please.
I am tired of this kind of lame advice, anonymous. It's not meant to be supportive. And I don't know nor care anymore whether it is intended to be mean-spirited. I'm just tired of hearing it because it's clear that when people give it, they don't really give a shit.
I was just writing about the kind of world I'd like to live in and what we have to expect of ourselves if we are going to have that. Maybe you do and maybe you don't give a shit about that. But I do. And I've made my peace with all of the roads that don't seem to get us there and am trying to develop a path that more likely will.
And that is a road that involves a lot of people in the world taking a lot more responsibility for what a fucked up mess we've created here, and doing something about it.
Blowjobs are great, when you've got nothing else to do with your life. I just don't have the kind of life that makes blowjobs seem all that exciting, given more substantial things to care about.
One of them is love. I am quite aware that most men nor women care about it like I do. I just don't give a shit, because I know that it can mean quite a bit when two people are comparably mutually committed.
I've obviously never experienced it before in the way that I'm still holding out for. I thought I had. I was wrong. But I've experienced it and sex enough to know that when it comes, it's far more substantial than sex as some kind of lame substitute.
I understand that you nor most people really get how much that friendship meant to me and how much it's hurt to lose it. I just don't care, anymore. I want nothing more than to just get over the pain of it and not think about some girl and some friend from college ever again.
But I write one line about how I expect an apology from Brandi and you decide to rip my heart out again.
And that's the kind of shit that I just won't settle for in my next relationship, anonymous. I need people in my life who care more about me than that. I was wrong to believe that Brandi was that kind of person. Thanks for rubbing it in.
Love,
Ben
Some personal expectations:
I expect that if I order a steak medium rare, it will come medium rare. Not rare. Not medium. Medium-rare. I know that requires paying attention to the steak while cooking it, but I expect it nonetheless.
I expect anonymous people who see getting head as a cure-all to volunteer to don the kneepads and to get to work. Dipshits.
I expect people to give a hoot about what they are doing. It may be crazy, but I expect people to take actual pride in their work.
I expect people to be only marginally dishonest. I understand dishonesty and wouldn't advocate a culture of complete truth at all times. I'll overlook a few fibs and spins, but expect a level of intellectual honesty, esp. when it matters.
I expect premium cable channels to cease and desist running movies in "pan and scan" mode. Theoretically, the HDTV mandate will eventually cure this problem, but in the meantime I expect letterboxing. We are big kids. We can handle the black space.
I expect the gambling tips industry to give up on me. I called a toll-free number one freaking time while waiting at a railroad crossing to hear the predicted winner of a game. Now, I get a few calls every week--over a year later--trying to sell me on various gambling tip services. I expect their surrender.
I expect Nancy Richards and the Dog Training Institute people to fork over the $144 they owe me before I actually have to do SOMETHING about it.
Actually, I don't expect any of that. I expect my steaks to turn out like crap, people to continue offering you miserable advice, a lack of pride, plenty of lies, lousy pans, a constant stream of can't-miss tip offerings and that Nancy Richards, et al, will never hand over the dough.
Guess that's the difference between expectations and desires.
Expectations are formed by experience. You don't have to have much experience to have low expectations sometimes.
Case in point: Anonymous.
However, I get your point.

Hilarious and true, Carson.
If we're going to have a shot, I just think we should know what it will take. And the recognition that if we don't take these kinds of things seriously, then we really don't have much of a shot. No matter who we elect or which party wins power or which ideology holds sway when and how or any of the other proxies we have for a barometer of how well the world is doing.
Low expectations are the state the world that at so many levels I've learned about and learned to accept. But if things are going to get better, we're going to have to lift our sights.
I want a better world. But I've also learned that, at some level, if I don't expect a better world, I'll never get one. And for some of the most important situations, especially -- Middle East peace, nuclear proliferation, liberal democratic commitments in non-democracies and democracies alike, commitments to equity around class, race, gender, etc., global health, economic well-being, etc. -- I know that if I don't expect better, we'll never get there. Because the cynicism fills the power vaccuum and creates destruction where there is so much potential for safe and healthy and productive and co-existing life.
My experience is that where higher expectations don't take some hold, that lower expectations can pull us down into oblivion, depending on how low we decide to go. And that's where all the most serious problems in the world get stuck.
And the sad thing to me is that none of it has to be that way.
Love,
Ben
