China to crackdown on singers after Bjork outburst

Notice the Chinese government's strict adherence to the rule of law. That's why that idea as some kind of final assessment of good and bad on the earth and in policy is so bankrupt. The Nazis followed the rule of law. Hell, they manipulated in vastly creative ways, having Jews turn themselves in to be gassed by passing Nuremburg laws that they have much reason to believe that especially Orthodox and Hasidic Jews would follow because these groups of Jewish people are strict adherents to law and Jewish law. And they killed them all. Hurray for the rule of law.

The controversy is about Bjork's song Declare Independence, which encourages individuals and nations to declare independence and which she has used to rally independence movements in Kosovo, and, relevant to China, Tibet. Taiwan would also be an excellent cause to promote. Nation-states like China and the U.S. are so arrogant to think that movements like Taiwanese independence or Tibetan independence or Kosovar independence are really about what strategic concerns those more powerful countries have and not about the concerns of those seeking independence. I say to the people of Tibet, Taiwan, Kosovo, Chechnya, Hong Kong and anyone else being controlled by a more intimidating country, you make your own decisions about your affairs and if that means independence, you got my blessing, at least. But even my blessing means shit. What matters is what you want to do with your own destinies.

I love Bjork's commentary:

"The fact that it has translated to its broadest meaning, the struggle of a suppressed nation, gives me much pleasure. I would like to wish all individuals and nations good luck in their battle for independence."

Bjork gives the big, "Fuck you," to the Chinese government, as well she should.

Fuck you, Chinese government.

And thank goodness that someone in music has figured out that important ideas don't have to have anything to do with party politics. Great ideas, like independence, just are.
