Actually, this church has it wrong. Biblically speaking, in the Hebrew tradition, they stoned women.
In Iran, death is the punishment for fornication.
Zina laws in Muslim countries impose sentences of public whippings, years in prison, and stonings for fornication and adultery.
Rules is rules. Isn't that what Jesus said? Something like that.
Glad they finally whipped that problem.

Actually, Jesus stopped the men from stoning the adulteress. Then he told her to go and sin no more. He wasn't in to throwing rocks.

And, for some reason, we have become convinced that this is the legacy of a pussy rather than of a great man. Only a pussy, after all, would suggest love and compassion as the foundation for dealing with such matters and all matters of moral conscience rather than the proscriptions and formal power of religious and political leaders. Somehow it escapes those who take Jesus' legacy seriously, and everyone else, for that matter, whether they take him seriously or not, that he was challenging those with formal power among the Jewish leadership and in the Roman government.
For some reason, humanity has a long-standing affair with rocks to solve our problems and get our way rather than the more compassionate route of the man from Nazareth. Sometimes you need a rock. But we've gotten used to saying, "Well, in that case, what we need is a lot more rocks."
And, too often, in countries where we otherwise take his message seriously, we do al of this in his name. Kind of foolish and ironic, and somewhat disrespectful to his legacy, I think, all at once.
I'll never understand, foutsc, why, with all of the sacrafices that people like Jesus made to get us past all this nonsense that people still romanticize that if we just got a little tougher, a little more aggressive, if we just got more and bigger rocks, such matters will be resolved.
That's where Lord Acton comes in. When people who have power do not get what they want with their power, they obsess over getting as much of it as they can because they just can't face that perhaps, just perhaps, it is not power that runs the affairs of men and women but the powerful consciences of people like this man and all the rest of us who still study his message and example 2000 years later.
Bill Kristol has talked like this, lately. Barack Obama has too. And they both do so in Jesus' name in a way that I'm pretty sure would have made the good carpenter roll over in his grave.
Why we perpetually think that enough rocks will finally make all our problems go away, I have no conceivable clue.
Except that too many of us admire the example of Jesus Christ, but trust the means of his crucifiers to be more coldly effective.
And the irony, of course, is that though such means were effective in killing this great man, they were wholly ineffective, by any objective standard, in shutting down his much more powerful ideas, which clearly guide the liberal democratic world, today, more than Roman or ancient Hebrew justice does any day.
Somehow we have got to get over the notion that all the world needs is more rocks if we want to end the rationalizations for real stonings and all sorts of repression that occurs all over the world, I think.
If not, it goes on. And what the lunatics who engage in such ugliness say to us is, "We are just like you. We just aren't such pussies about it."
I'm quite sure that's why a lot of Jesus' murderers would have told him, in his day, actually.
